POKOTABI / Delicious detours
兎亀屋
Choose from seasonal jōnamagashi and wasanbon dry sweets at Tokiya, or try making wagashi such as nerikiri yourself. You can also enjoy your creations with tea.
〒602-8354 Kyoto, Kamigyo Ward, Saitocho, 361ー1001 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At Tokiya, the changing seasons are reflected in the shapes and designs of its jōnamagashi, refined Japanese confections. The selection in the shop changes with the season; past visitors have mentioned sweets inspired by green plums, Japanese snowbell flowers, fresh green maple leaves and hydrangeas. Choosing one that captures the time of year is part of the pleasure, and they are worth considering as seasonal gifts.
The shop also offers wasanbon dry sweets, which one visitor praised for their delicate, crumbly texture that dissolves in the mouth. Pair them with seasonal fresh confections to take home a mix of wagashi in different forms and made with different ingredients.
Tokiya offers more than sweets to take away: visitors can also try making wagashi. One account describes shaping nerikiri by hand; another recalls making two kinds of confectionery, enjoying them with tea and taking home a small souvenir. It is a way to make the time spent crafting wagashi part of the travel experience. There is also a report of sampling freshly made wasanbon dry sweets during the activity.
Dorayaki, sold intermittently, is another treat to look out for. One review describes a gently sweet, egg-flavoured pancake with a chewy texture, filled with chunky anko made from Dainagon azuki beans. Whether you stop by to choose jōnamagashi and dry sweets or to try making wagashi, Tokiya offers a different way to enjoy Japanese confections.
